Violin to OEM vSphere

The OEM deal will underpin Violin’s enterprise-oriented virtualization-in-a-box widgetry

Violin Memory, the flash memory array merchant that's been on and off about an IPO and pulled in an $80 million D round three or four months ago, is going to be OEMing vSphere from VMware, which is majority owned by traditional storage biggie EMC.

The company is evidently cultivating an appreciation of little oddities like that. Its CEO Don Basile used to run Fusion-io.

Anyway, the OEM deal will underpin Violin's enterprise-oriented virtualization-in-a-box widgetry for running business-critical and Big Data applications "at the speed of memory" in virtualized and cloud environments.

The company says by running vSphere natively on its arrays customers can put business-critical apps directly on the system and rev performance without worrying about the configuration or management of traditional storage networks.

It claims it's eliminating the virtualization challenges of disk-based storage infrastructure and giving clients a fully virtualized data center.

Violin will be one of VMware's embedded OEM partners, hoping to realize increased control of virtualized deployments.

ESG Labs has reportedly clocked Violin delivering 1.35 million IOPS for virtualized mixed workloads on vSphere, and scaling up to 10,000 virtual desktops on a single array using VMware View.
